 he use of these\ntransitions for computing column densities and examine th
 e idea of a\nglobal canonical relation for OH with respect to CH (and ulti
 mately H2)\nand finally look into the synergies that can be formed between

 (ISM) plays a key role in understanding star formation (SF) process\, as i
 t is at the same time the reservoir of gas and dust and the repository of 
 stellar ejecta\, enriched by the elements produced by nucleosynthesis in m
 assive stars. While it is still difficult to assess the details of the ISM
  properties at high redshifts\, galaxies in the Local Group offer the oppo
 rtunity to study several ‘chemically-young’ dwarf galaxies. We studied
  the physical properties of the ionized gas of the low-metallicity dwarf g
 alaxy\, IC 10\, at various spatial scales: HII regions vs. entire galaxy a
 nd examine whether diagnostics for integrated measurements introduce bias 
 in the results. We modeled the ionized gas combining the mid- and far-infr
 ared fine-structure cooling lines with the photoionization code Cloudy. On
 e of the main limitations in this study was the assumption of uniform phys
 ical conditions. Ideally\, one would like to use a model with\, for instan
 ce\, a non-uniform density. However\, using only observation of Spitzer/IR
 S and Herschel/PACS\, we were able to use only one unambiguous density tra
 cer ([SIII] line ratio). Our observations of the [OIII] 52 μm line\, acce
 ssible only with SOFIA\, combined with our Herschel [OIII] 88 μm map allo
 w us to obtain an additional and critical constraint on the gas density. T
 he combination of the [OIII] 52 μm and [OIII] 88 μm lines is a powerful 
 density diagnostic\, with critical density of 4.4×10^3 cm−3 and 500 cm
 −3 respectively\, making the ratio of these two lines sensitive to an io
 nized phase of lower density than that traced by [SIII]\, for example\, or
  the optical lines\, thereby identifying several ionized gas components al

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: BARR\, Andrew ()\nWe have performed a 5-8 μm spectr
 al line survey of the hot molecular core associated with the massive proto
 star AFGL 2591\, using SOFIA/EXES. We have supplemented these data with a 
 ground based study around 4.5 μm using the iSHELL instrument\, and 8-13 
 μm using TEXES\, on the IRTF. We present the first detection of ro-vibrat
 ional transitions of CS in this source. The absorption lines are centred o
 n average around -10 kms−1. Temperatures for CS\, hot 13CO and 12CO v=1-
 2 agree well and are around 700 K. We derive a CS abundance of 8×10−3 a
 nd 2×10−6 with respect to CO and H2 respectively. This enhanced CS abun
 dance with respect to the surrounding cloud (1×10−8) may reflect sublim
 ation of H2S ice followed by gas-phase reactions to form CS. EXES observat
 ions of CS are likely to probe deeply into the hot core\, to the base of t
 he outflow. Submillimeter and infrared observations trace different compon
 ents of the hot core as revealed by the difference in systemic velocities\
 , line widths and temperatures\, as well as the CS abundance.\n\nhttps://e

 gion associated with the Carina Nebula provides an ideal laboratory in spa
 ce to study the interplay between the interstellar medium and newly formed
  stars. While a great number of massive stars have formed in the past 3 My
 r in Carina\, the current star formation activity is concentrated towards 
 the south\, in a region known as South Pillar. The region is characterized
  by a large number of mbdedded clusters as well as outflows in the form of
  irradiated Herbig-Haro jets. We present here a study of the photodissocia
 tion regions (PDRs) in two of the prominent pillars in southern Carina\, b
 ased on observations of CO using APEX\, [C II] at 158 micron and [O I] at 
 63 micron using upGREAT/SOFIA. Comparison of line profiles and velocity-ch
 annel maps of tracers of PDR sensitive to slightly different physical cond
 itions (such as densities\, temperatures and UV radiation field) will be p

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: SAHAI\, Raghvendra ()\nWe present first results from
  a GREAT program to study the atomic component of select members of a new 
 class of tadpole-shaped free-floating evaporating gas globules (frEGGs) in
  massive star-formation regions. Since discovering the most prominent memb
 er of this class in an HST imaging survey\, we have now identified substan
 tial populations of such objects in several massive star-forming regions u
 sing Spitzer IRAC 8 micron images. By virtue of their distinct\, isolated 
 morphologies\, frEGGs are ideal astrophysical laboratories for probing sta
 r formation in irradiated environments. Our molecular-line observations (e
 .g.\, CO\, 13CO J=2-1 and HCO+ J=3-2) reveal the presence of dense molecul
 ar cores associated with these objects\, with total masses of cool (~50 K)
  molecular gas exceeding 0.5-5 Msun\, and our radio continuum imaging of a
  few reveals bright photo-ionized peripheries in these objects. Our GREAT 
 study of 3 frEGGs has allowed us to detect the warm (few x 100 K) atomic g
 as that is expected to exist in a photon-dominated region surrounding the 
 molecular gas and determine its mass\, and probe the photoevaporative flow
  that is expected to drive the evolution of these objects. Our SOFIA data 
 (together with existing multiwavelength data)\, when compared with results
  from sophisticated 3-D numerical simulations\, will provide a unique wind
 ow into the dynamical and chemical evolution of these irradiated dense gas
 eous globules\, and the star-formation process within them.\n\nhttps://eve

 our analysis of one of the first\, complete CII maps at high (15") resolut
 ion across the entire star forming disk of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC694
 6. This data set from FIFI-LS allows us to study CII emission and key rati
 os\, like CII-to-CO (a tracer of the CO-dark gas) or CII-to-TIR (a measure
  of the photoelectric heating efficiency)\, across the galaxy disk and as 
 a function of local conditions (dust properties\, radiation field\, etc.).
  By means of stacking the large number of independent spectra provided by 
 the full disk mapping data\, we also perform high significance arm-interar
 m comparisons of these quantities to study the impact of dynamical environ
 ment. Finally\, we compare CII emission to accurately calibrated\, canonic
 al SFR tracers (e.g. H-alpha+IR) and assess its use as a star formation ra

  play a crucial role on the evolution of molecular clouds and cores. While
  dense structures such as filaments are thought to be formed from magnetic
 ally driven cloud contraction\, at core scales the magnetic field can be a
  strong source of support against the gravitational collapse. Most polarim
 etric observations are sensitive either to large\, cloud scales or to smal
 ler core scales\, but there are not many observations reported on the clou
 d-core transition phase (0.1-1.0 pc). Single-dish observations are thus of
  great importance to understand the role of magnetic fields on the formati
 on of cores. We have used the SOFIA/HAWC+ camera to perform polarimetric o
 bservations of the source B228 in Lupus I\, a highly magnetized filamentar
 y cloud. B228 is the only Class 0 object in Lupus I\, and its proximity (1
 50 pc)\, extended envelope and bright FIR emission make it a suitable targ
 et for SOFIA observations. To our knowledge\, these are among the first TH
 z polarimetric observations of low-mass young stellar objects performed wi
 th SOFIA. Our preliminary maps suggest an ordered magnetic field aligned w
 ith the large scale cloud field and with the direction of the bipolar outf
 low powered by B228. Our results are consistent with models of magnetized 
 core collapse that predict self-similar fragmentation of a filament into c
 ores where the magnetic field morphology is inherited from the parental cl
 oud. We plan to use statistical tools such as the angular dispersion funct
 ion to derive the magnetic field strength and the mass-to-flux ratio at th
 e spatial scales traced by SOFIA. We will also compare the SOFIA observati
 ons with optical and Planck polarization data to investigate how the unifo
 rm and turbulent components of the magnetic field evolve from cloud to cor

 ve evolved stars eject large amounts of material into outer space. This ma
 terial which has been locked and processed in the stars via nucleosynthesi
 s over millions of years is finally brought back and is then newly availab
 le to play a key role in cosmic chemistry. Here at the very first step of 
 chemical evolution\, the metamorphosis from atoms and ions in the inner co
 re dense stellar plasma to rigid nanosized grains and molecules in the out
 er atmospheres is still not well understood. How do the first molecules fo
 rm? What is the chemical inventory of the stellar atmosphere? And what is 
 the spatial distribution of these molecular species? To investigate these 
 processes in the vicinity of the star requires both\, high spatial and hig
 h frequency resolution.To study excitation processes and to cover a wide r
 ange of molecular species that can be identified mid-infrared studies are 
 highly valuable. Recently new spectrographs like TEXES at the IRTF or EXES
  onboard SOFIA allow for high frequency resolution observations. We have p
 erformed observations towards the stars VY Canis Majoris and Mira (o-ceti)
  using the IRTF-TEXES observatory. Molecule identifications will be presen
 ted comprising metal\, carbon and silicium bearing molecules such as SiO\,
  CO2\, TiO and others. As the identification of molecular species requires
  high confidence in the transition frequency positions accompanying labora
 tory measurements have been performed\, e.g for Si2C\, Al2O and TiO around

 ved [OI] 63 micron and 145 micron observations at selected positions in th
 e LMC. Their line profiles match those of CO at some positions but are mor
 e similar to the [CII] profiles at other positions. This indicates that we
  cannot simply assume that the velocity components of the [OI] emission ar
 e the same as either CO or [CII]. At least at one position in 30 Dor\, the
  combination of the two [OI] spectra indicates a self-absorption of the 63
  micron emission. We also present the result of the KOSMA-tau PDR model fi
 t\, where a single clump ensemble does not satisfactorily reproduce all th

 II] 88 m and 52 m\, [CII] 158 m\, [OI] 145 m and [NIII] 57 m lines we have
  mapped in the 30Dor region of the Large Magellanic Cloud with FIFI LS. Th
 ese valuable diagnostics highlight the striking nature of this massive sta
 r-forming region living within a low metallicity galaxy. We use the ratio 
 of the 2 FIR [OIII] lines to determine the electron density distribution i
 n the region. Using the Meudon Photodissociation Region code\, we model th
 e radiation field\, GUV\, and the pressure\, constrained by the line ratio
 s [OI] 145 m /[CII]\, [CII]/LFIR and the ([OI] 145 m + [CII])/LFIR. Compar
 ing the modelled GUV with the observed starlight intensity\, we obtain a 3
 D view of the region. We also find that\, due to the intense radiation fro
 m the R136 cluster\, much of the CO has been photodissociated and we quant
 ify and reservoir of H2 that exists outside the CO-emitting region\n\nhttp

 n A was observed in the [CII] 158 μm line as part of a large mapping prog
 ram with the upGREAT heterodyne array instrument on board SOFIA (PI A. G. 
 G. M. Tielens). Throughout the map we find peaks in [CII] emission\, which
  are located at the interfaces of HII regions and the dense\nmolecular gas
 . The bright [CII] emission is accompanied by a strong increase of the [13
 CII] emission leading to significantly smaller [CII]/ [13CII]-ratios compa
 red to the natural abundance ratio expected for Orion A. Using a homogenou
 s single component model\, we estimate the optical depth of the regions th
 at show a strong [13CII] emission. The so determined optical depth\nvaries
  between τ [CII] = 2-7\, showing that Orion A is highly affected by optic
 al depth effects.\nIn a second step we estimate the physical parameters of
  the ionized gas through a two-layer multicomponent model of the radiative
  transfer equation. As a result\, we find two possible solution for the op
 tically thick regions. The first ‘cold\nsolution’ indicates a cold and
  dense C+ background which is affected by self-absorption. The second ‘h
 ot solution’ indicates an optically thin background and an absorbing col
 d C+ foreground. However\, in both cases the origin of the cold ionized ga

 sly unpublished CARMA data to show that IRS1 is a single O-star powering a
 n ionized jet and driving a large N-S outflow roughly aligned with the ion

 one of the most prominent star-forming regions in the section of the Sagit
 tarius-Carina Arm lying near our line of sight toward the Galactic center.
  The bright stellar system of M8\, Herschel 36 (Her 36)\, is responsible f
 or ionizing the HII region of NGC 6523 and the Hourglass Nebula. We carrie
 d out a comprehensive survey to explore the morphology of M8 and to quanti
 fy the physical conditions of the gas responsible for the emission of vari
 ous molecules (Tiwari et al. 2018 & Tiwari et al. Submitted). From our rec
 ent observations with upGREAT receiver onboard SOFIA\, we want to emphasiz
 e the role of OI in probing the density gradients in the photodissociation

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: KLEIN\, Randolf ()\nPhoto-dissociation regions (PDRs
 ) are the places where molecular clouds are destroyed by UV radiation of f
 orming massive stars. The molecular gas is photo-dissociated and then ioni
 zed by UV radiation. The UV radiation below 13.6 eV heats the gas via the 
 photo-electric effect on dust grains. Cooling happens through the dust con
 tinuum and a handful of far infrared (FIR) fine-structure lines. FIFI-LS\,
  the FIR spectrometer onboard the US-German airborne observatory\, SOFIA\,
  can map these main cooling lines efficiently.  We observed the well-studi
 ed edge-on PDR\, M17-SW\, with high spatial resolution in all major FIR co
 oling lines of the ionized and neutral medium.  By comparing the observed 
 line intensities to model predictions we mapped the physical conditions of
  the ionized and neutral layer of the PDR by The [OIII] line ratio readily
  provides the electron density maps in the ionized layer just above the PD
 R. The median electron density in that area is about 103cm-3. The analysis
  of the [OI]\, [CII]\, CO and continuum emission with the PDR Tool box all
 owed us to map the gas density and UV radiation field strength over the re
 gion. The gas density in the PDR is varies between 105 and 106cm-3. The UV
  field is about 104.4 in Habing units. We also estimated the optical depth
  effects to the [OIII]63μm line and the contribution of the PDR to the ub
 iquitous [CII] emission for each map position.  While the applied model is
  comparatively simple\, a consistent picture of the spatial variation of t
 he physical parameters over the mapped region could be derived. Based on t
 hese findings the processes and energetics in the PDR can be studied furth
 er possibly by applying more detailed models together with more data from

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: HARRIS\, Andrew ()\nWe report on results from the GR
 EAT project to image the Galaxy's Central Molecular Zone in C+. The image 
 covers the inner 200 pc of the Galaxy. Velocity-resolved spectroscopy is a
 n essential tool for understanding the dynamics of the region and separati
 ng physical components along the line of sight. The exact topics of this a
 nd related talks will be sorted out in discussions between Harris\, Gueste
