DESCRIPTION:Speakers: IMMER\, Katharina ()\nThe W33 high-mass star forming
  complex is the ideal object to study high-mass star formation in differen
 t evolutionary stages in a small area on the sky. The six star forming reg
 ions in the complex are in the evolutionary stages: early protostellar pha
 se (W33 Main1)\, protostellar phase (W33 A1\, W33B1)\, hot core phase (W33
  A\, W33B)\, and HII region phase (W33Main). Since N2H+ and CS trace the c
 old and dense gas and their abundances are normally quite high\, these mol
 ecules are easily detected in star forming regions. From previous APEX obs
 ervations\, we determined the integrated intensity ratio N2H+(3-2)/CS(6-5)
  in the six W33 sources. This ratio follows a clear trend as a function of
  the evolutionary stage of the targets and is a good candidate for a "chem
 ical clock". In combination with APEX observations of N2H+(2-1) and CS(4-3
 ) and previously obtained H2 column densities\, we determined the abundanc
 es of these two molecules\, using radiative transfer models. I will presen
 t the results and show how we tested the abundance ratio of N2H+/CS as a c

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: KÖNIG\, Carsten ()\nExtending our knowledge on star
 -formation to the outer Galaxy and comparing it to the properties found in
  the inner parts of the Milky Way helps us understand the influence of the
  Galactic environment on star-formation. For this purpose we used the APEX
  telescope to conduct pointed CO(2-1) observations towards more than 800 c
 lumps identified from Hi-GAL 250 micron dust continuum emission maps. Bein
 g able to identify more than 1700 velocity components and calculating thei
 r kinematic distances\, we were able to unravel the structure of the south
 ern outer Galaxy in unprecedented detail with a project that was mainly ob
 served just as a bad weather backup project at APEX. With the distances kn
 own\, we were furthermore able to calculate physical parameters of the clu
 mps from dust spectral energy distributions such as dust temperature\, bol
 ometric luminosities\, clump masses and column densities. In this talk we 
 will not only present the structure and physical parameters found in the s
 outhern outer Galaxy\, but also investigate their dependence on Galactocen
 tric radius (by comparing them to the results found for the inner Galaxy b
 y ATLASGAL and Hi-GAL)\, the influence of an expanding Galactic supershell
  present in the observed region as well as the correlation of star-formati
 on properties with the supposed loci of the spiral arms. Finally we will i
 ntroduce you to our planned CO mapping campaign for the southern outer Gal
 axy at APEX that will allow a complete and much more detailed view on on t

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: TIWARI\, Maitraiyee ()\nMessier 8\, the Lagoon Nebul
 a\, is one of the brightest HII regions in the sky. We collected an extens
 ive dataset comprising multiple submillimeter spectral lines from neutral 
 and ionized carbon and from CO. Based on it\, we aim to understand M8’s 
 morphology and that of its associated photo dissociation region and to car
 ry out a quantitative analysis of the regions’ physical conditions such 
 as kinetic temperatures and volume densities. Using the Stratospheric Obse
 rvatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)\, the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment
  (APEX) 12 m and the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) 30 
 m telescopes\, we have performed a comprehensive imaging survey of the emi
 ssion from the fine structure lines of [CII] and [CI] and multiple rotatio
 nal transitions of carbon monoxide (CO) isotopologues within 1.3 × 1.3 pc
  around the dominant Herschel 36 (Her 36) system composed of at least thre
 e massive stars. To further explore the morphology of the region we compar
 e archival infrared\, optical and radio images of the nebula with our newl
 y obtained fine structure line and CO data\, in particular with the veloci
 ty information they provide. We perform a quantitative analysis\, using bo
 th LTE and non-LTE methods to determine the abundances of some of the obse
 rved species as well as kinetic temperatures and volume densities. In this

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: LEE\, Min-Young ()\nCarbon in different phases (C+\,
  C\, and CO) play a key role in the evolution of the ISM as major coolants
  and can be used as a powerful probe of the physical conditions and energe
 tics of the ISM. With an aim of providing insights into how high-mass star
 s form and interact with the surrounding ISM\, we have recently performed 
 APEX observations of the [CI] 492 GHz fine-structure line for a representa
 tive sample of high-mass star-forming regions in the Galaxy (including ~40
  IR-dark sources\, ~50 IR-bright sources\, and ~10 HII regions). The [CI] 
 line is well detected from all but one of the target clouds\, demonstratin
 g APEX as an excellent instrument to study the neutral ISM at sub-millimet
 er wavelengths. Our preliminary analysis suggests that various populations
  of high-mass star-forming regions have systematically different propertie
 s of [CI] emission\, e.g.\, ~60%\, ~80%\, and ~100% of the IR-dark\, IR-br
 ight\, and HII region sources have the [CI] integrated intensity higher th
 an 10 K km/sec (median of all sample clouds). In the future\, our [CI] obs
 ervations will be combined with available multi-transition CO data\, as we
 ll as upcoming SOFIA [CII] 158 micron observations\, enabling us to examin
 e the physical\, chemical\, and energetic conditions of the carbon-traced

 g regions like the Giant Nebula NGC 3603 in the constellation Carina\, are
  ideal sources to study the clumpy structure of molecular clouds\, as well
  as the chemical and thermodynamic effects of the nearby ionising sources.
  Studies in the last decades have revealed NGC3603's hidden nature as the 
 Milky Way’s most active stellar nursery. Maps of both [O I] 63 and 145 m
 icrons fine structure lines\, one of the most important cooling lines of t
 he ISM with a not fully understood role in the process of star formation\,
  were recently obtained with SOFIA/upGREAT toward NGC 3603. I will present
  analysis of the distribution and excitation of the [O I] lines\, combined
  with the CO SLED obtained with APEX and SOFIA/GREAT. A comparison with th
 e [O I] line and excitation of M17 SW will also be presented. The role of 
 the [O I] lines in the process of star formation will be addressed.\n\nhtt

  Way are correlated where m_cluster ~ r_cluster ^ 1.67. We analytically st
 udy the interplay between turbulence and gravity in the molecular ISM\, an
 d found that structures that can dynamically detach from the ambient mediu
 m and collapse should obey m ~ r ^ 5/3. The normalisation of the scaling i
 s determined by the level of the ambient turbulence. The theoretical scali
 ng relation predicts the observations to a good accuracy. This is one inte
 resting case where the development of a theory is directly inspired by res
 ults observations of a large sample of objects carried out directly with t

 stars is still an enigma in modern astrophysics. Only massive clumps\, at 
 the onset of star formation\, can reveal the initial conditions and shed l
 ight on the necessary physical processes leading to their formation. From 
 the 870 micron ATLASGAL survey of the inner Galaxy\, we identified the com
 plete sample of infrared quiet massive clumps located closer than 5 kpc. W
 e targeted this sample in the frame of the SPARKS project with ALMA\, reac
 hing the physical scales of individual collapsing envelopes. This survey r
 eveals a large sample of high-mass protostellar fragments\, including youn
 g\, emerging hot-cores. In addition\, we find a handful of objects that ar
 e promising candidates for the rare high-mass pre-stellar cores. I discuss
  here the statistical results of this survey\, and show a case study of on
 e of the targets which reveals a ~100 Msol protostellar envelope that stay

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: STRANDET\, Maria ()\nI will present the discovery of
  the highest-redshift millimeter-selected dusty star-forming galaxy to dat
 a\, SPT0311-58\, at z = 6.900(2). SPT0311-58 was discovered via its 1.4 mm
  thermal dust continuum emission in the South Pole Telescope (SPT)-SZ surv
 ey. The spectroscopic redshift was determined through an ALMA 3mm frequenc
 y scan that detected CO(6-5)\, CO(7-6)\, and [CI](2-1)\, and subsequently 
 was confirmed by detections of [CII] with APEX and CO(3-2) with ATCA. We c
 onstrain the properties of the ISM in SPT0311-58 with a radiative transfer
  analysis of the dust continuum photometry and the CO and [CI] line emissi
 on. This allows us to determine the gas content without ad hoc assumptions
  about gas mass scaling factors. We find that SPT0311-58 is extremely mass
 ive and its large mass and intense star formation is very rare for a sourc

 model of structure formation\, giant elliptical galaxies form through merg
 ing processes\, within the highest density peaks known as protoclusters. U
 sually\, radio galaxies pinpoint the location of these young protoclusters
 . However\, as part of a campaign to map Lyman-alpha around several radio-
 quiet quasars\, we have discovered three giant (>250 kpc) nebulae that hos
 t multiple AGN and are surrounded by overdensities of Lyman-alpha emitters
 . These regions are prime candidates for massive protoclusters in the earl
 y stages of assembly. To search for ultraluminous starburst activity withi
 n these unique structures\, we have initiated a submm programme with singl
 e-dish telescopes\, including APEX. Intriguingly\, our first targeted larg
 e-scale structure at z=3.167 showed strong emission at 870 micron as seen 
 with LABOCA. In this talk\, I will present these observations and discuss 
 them also in light of the follow-up observations with SMA. I will conclude
  the talk by discussing the synergy between our APEX observations and our

 ur-magnitude diagrams of (local) clusters is the often so-called red seque
 nce. These red-sequence galaxies are dominating the core of the galaxy clu
 sters and their members are massive\, early-type galaxies. Distant dusty s
 tarbursts with short time scales of building up the bulk of their stellar 
 mass are promising candidates for being the ancestors of red sequence gala
 xies. Thus\, searching for massive\, dusty star-forming galaxies offers a 
 great opportunity to trace galaxy overdensities and therefore the cosmic w
 eb in the early universe. With APEX-LABOCA\, we have targeted several know
 n (proto)cluster fields. We focus on the protocluster field of the radio g
 alaxy MRC1138-262 where have uncovered an excess of submillimeter galaxies
 . Based on this initial discovery\, we have conducted extensive observing 
 campaigns of the cold interstellar medium - dust and molecular gas - of se
 veral submm bright cluster members with ALMA and the Australian Telescope 
 Compact Array. The presented study enables us to investigate the environme
 ntal dependency of the amount of cold molecular gas\, the star formation e
 fficiency and the formation of red-sequence galaxies. Finally\, I will dis
 cuss the potential of revealing (proto)clusters of massive\, dusty starbur

 by Universe and at high redshifts has shown that CI is a very powerful tra
 cer of the molecular gas in the galaxy interstellar medium and starts givi
 ng an advantage at z>0.5 because it remains well excited for cooler lower 
 density molecular gas and it is optically thin (no need of the XCO factor)
 . When coupled with high-J CO emission lines the ratio\, high-J CO/CI\, is
  a good proxy of (warm\, dense\, star-forming (SF) gas)/(total H2 gas) mas
 s fraction and provides a unique insight on the main source heating the ga
 s and therefore indicating whether a system is merger driven or disc-like.
  I show observations of three lensed galaxies at z~3 obtained with the APE
 X/SEPIA5 receiver and a few ALMA observations towards high-z submm galaxie
 s and derive conclusions on the dominant power source of the molecular ISM

 /SEPIA Band-5 observations targeting the CO (J=2-1) emission line of 24 He
 rschel-detected galaxies at z=0.1−0.2. Combining this sample {with} our 
 recent new Valpara\\'iso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES)\, we investigat
 e the star formation efficiencies (SFEs = SFR/MH2) of galaxies at low reds
 hift. We find the SFE of our sample bridges the gap between normal star-fo
 rming galaxies and Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs)\, which are t
 hought to be triggered by different star formation modes. Considering the 
 SFE′ as the SFR and the L′CO ratio\, our data show a continuous and sm
 ooth increment as a function of infrared luminosity (or star formation rat
 e) with a scatter about 0.5 dex\, instead of a steep jump with a bimodal b
 ehaviour. This result is due to the use of a sample with a much larger ran
 ge of sSFR/sSFRms using LIRGs\, with luminosities covering the range betwe
 en normal and ULIRGs. We conclude that the main parameters controlling the
  scatter of the SFE in star-forming galaxies are the systematic uncertaint
 y of the αCO conversion factor\, the gas fraction and physical size.\n\nh

 the outstanding questions of whether dusty star-formation contributes to e
 arly galaxy evolution\, and whether dusty galaxies play an important role 
 in shaping cosmic reionization. To reach that goal\, we propose to constru
 ct a spectrometer to map in three dimensions the specific intensity due to
  line emission\, a technique known as "Intensity Mapping". Our experiment 
 is capitalizing on the recent technology breakthrough that our team obtain
 ed on the development of large KID (Kinetic Inductance Detectors) instrume
 nts like NIKA2 at the IRAM 30-meters telescope. From the technological poi
 nt-of-view\, CONCERTO will represent to our knowledge the first implementa
 tion of multi-thousands spectro-imaging pixels at millimeter and sub-milli
 meter wavelengths. We propose to implement around 3\,000 KID detectors to 
 image an instantaneous field-of-view of 12 to 15 arc-minutes in diameter\,
  with an angular resolution of the order of 20 arc-seconds. Each detector 
 will be able to acquire between 2 and 10 spectra per second with a spectra
 l resolution R=lambda/Delta_lambda=100-200 and spanning the range 200-360G
 Hz\, ideally accessible from APEX. CONCERTO will thus\, from the read-out 
 and data analysis point-of-view\, be the equivalent of a pure imager conta
 ining 3E5 detectors. The high-speed\, i.e. above the typical atmospheric 1
 /f corner\, Fourier interferometry technique is possible only thanks to th
 e fast response time of the KID compared to the competing bolometers. I wi
 ll describe the instrument design and present preliminary results obtained
  during the development of the CONCERTO pathfinder named KISS. The pathfin
 der will be installed by the end of 2018 in Tenerife on the QUIJOTE telesc
 ope and will be dedicated to observe low-redshift galaxies clusters via th

 lar medium has a central role in galaxy growth and evolution. In normal ga
 laxies following the so-called ‘main sequence’ of star-forming galaxie
 s\, the star formation rate is believed to be regulated uniquely by the am
 ount of gas available\, and more specifically by the mass of cold and dens
 e molecular gas. Despite the enormous efforts to trace molecular gas in la
 rger and larger samples of galaxies\, at multiple scales and at multiple e
 pochs\, nearly all of our empirical knowledge of scaling relations linking
  molecular gas and galaxy properties is still based on observations of loc
 al massive (e.g. M*>10^10 M_Sun)\, metal-rich and gas-rich spirals. There 
 is therefore a strong motivation to test molecular gas scaling relations o
 ver a much broader dynamic range of galaxy properties. With this goal in m
 ind\, we have undertaken the “APEX low-redshift legacy survey of molecul

 ar gas surveys of the Galactic Plane are unveiling an astonishing picture 
 of the three-dimensional gas organization of the Milky Way. This provides 
 the opportunity to investigate the building blocks of the molecular medium
 \, the Molecular Clouds (MCs)\, in an unprecedented level of detail. We wi
 ll present a catalog of more than 90000 objects from the Structure\, excit
 ation\, and dynamics of the inner Galactic interstellar medium (SEDIGISM) 
 and CO(3-2) High-Resolution Survey (COHRS) data. The decomposition techniq
 ue we use\, SCIMES (Spectral Clustering for Interstellar Molecular Emissio
 n Segmentation)\, allows for a statistical analysis of integrated as well 
 as resolved properties of the clouds. We will show how morphology\, star f
 ormation efficiency\, clump formation efficiency\, and kinematics vary wit
 hin those gas structures and with respect to the Galactic environments. To
 gether\, we will related the integrated properties of SEDIGISM and COHRS o
 bjects to the ones observed for molecular clouds in other regions of the M
 ilky Way and nearby galaxies. These pioneer studies represent a step forwa

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: ANDRE\, Philippe ()\nHerschel imaging observations o
 f nearby clouds suggest that molecular filaments and prestellar cores repr
 esent two fundamental steps in the star formation process. They support a 
 picture of low-mass star formation in which filaments form first in the di
 ffuse ISM\, probably as a result of large-scale turbulent compression\, an
 d then prestellar cores arise from gravitational fragmentation of the dens
 est filaments. Due to the limited resolution of Herschel data\, however\, 
 it remains to be seen whether this picture also applies to more distant re
 gions of high-mass star formation in the Galaxy. I will present recent res
 ults of an on-going project to image several high-mass star-forming comple
 xes at a factor 3.5 higher resolution than Herschel at 350 and 450 microns
  using the ArTéMiS bolometer camera on APEX. The regions studied so far i
 nclude Orion A\, NGC6334\, NGC6357\, M17\, W48\, and the CMZ. I will discu
 ss a comparison of our ArTéMiS findings in these regions with Herschel re

 st mass ratio is a common approach to estimate the basic properties of mol
 ecular clouds\, such as total mass and column density of molecular hydroge
 n\, from (sub)mm continuum observations of the dust. In the Milky Way a si
 ngle value is used at all galactocentric radii\, independently of the obse
 rved metallicity gradients. Both models and extragalactic observations sug
 gest that this quantity increases for decreasing metallicity Z\, typical o
 f the outer regions in disks\, where fewer heavy elements are available to
  form dust grains. We investigate the radial variation of the gas-to-dust 
 ratio in the Milky Way disc by comparing estimates of this parameter in a 
 sample of 23 massive and dense clumps in the far outer Galaxy (R_gc > 14 k
 pc) with those obtained for the ATLASGAL TOP100 sample. Using the metallic
 ity gradients derived from Cepheids\, we additionally connect the variatio
 n of the gas-to-dust ratio to Z\, finding that the gas-to- dust ratio incr
 eases as Z to the power -1.4. This indicates that grain growth dominates o
 ver destruction\, and is the most common situation in late-type galaxies l
 ike the MW. Our results are also in excellent agreement with recent estima
 tes of the gas-to-dust ratio in the Magellanic Clouds.\n\nhttps://events.m

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: MAZUMDAR\, Parichay ()\nSupernova Remnants (SNRs) ar
 e structures resulting from Supernovae which inject large amounts of energ
 y\, momentum and enriched ejecta into the interstellar medium (ISM). Their
  interaction with the ISM can cause interstellar turbulence and drive gala
 ctic outflows. Our understanding of the interaction of an SNR with a molec
 ular cloud (MC) is limited due to the paucity of known sources and observe
 d molecules. In this project we have carried out sub-millimeter observatio
 ns of the well known SNR W28 using the APEX telescope to probe the post-sh
 ock conditions in an SNR-MC interaction region. Such a study sheds light o
 n the molecular complexity found in these regions and helps us to understa
 nd how the SNR-MC interactions modify the physical conditions and conseque
 ntly the chemistry of the ISM. In our observations\, we have have found ro
 tational lines of multiple species including CH3OH\, H2CO and SO. In this 
 talk we will have a look at the results of this study and the various meth
 ods used to constraint the physical conditions in the interaction region.\
