RadioNet Workshop on Future Trends in Radio Astronomy Instrumentation

Despite the all-dominating Corona Virus crisis we are pleased to announce the RadioNet Technical Dissemination Workshop on new trends in Radio Astronomy instrumentation. These two days of virtual coming together, presenting new ideas by zoom, and discussing future trends via web-chat will take place on September, 21st and 22nd 2020 organized by the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn (Germany). This workshop will take place in any case, organized explicitly as a virtual event.

This meeting is the last in a series of technical workshops combining several aspects of engineering and operational issues at radio observatories all over Europe and beyond. It provides the unique opportunity to cross border the different communities to see what ‘the others’ are doing and planning and enhance communication between engineers, scientists, and operators.

The Workshop is fully sponsored (no participation fees) and organized by the EU Consortium RadioNet within the Horizon2020 Program of the European Commission and continues a very successful series of engineering workshops and telescope operation - oriented meetings organized within the Sixth and Seventh Framework Programme. Engineers and scientists working at various observatories to get and keep their radio telescopes running are welcome to present their interesting projects in an oral presentation tailored to a virtual presentation. Due to internal visitor restrictions and the purely virtual format of the workshop we won’t be able to show poster presentations.

For information on past meetings in this series see
http://www.radionet-eu.org/fp7wiki/doku.php?id=na:engineering:ew

SOME TOPICS OF THE WORKSHOP:

• Reuse of existing infrastructure for and beyond radio astronomy

• Reuse of existing instrumentation technology

• Future trends in instrumentation

• Stunning results from RadioNet JRAs

• New approaches towards unthought ideas

The workshop will start on Monday, September 21 at noon and end on Tuesday, September 22 at ~ 6 pm. Unfortunately, a common social dinner as we had it for many years will not be possible due to distancing rules in Germany. Instead, we will have a virtual social coming together with individual small talk and some entertainment.

The meeting will be informal and should offer lots of time for discussions. Each presentation is limited to a maximum of about 30 minutes with some time for discussion included. The abstracts will be made available as a workshop worksheet per e-mail in .pdf format.

REGISTRATION

Registration can be made online on the workshop’s indico webpage (see menu on the left).

before September 15th, 2020

ACCOMMODATION

As this is a purely virtual event and no visitors are allowed in our institute accommodation is obsolete.

DEADLINES

Application for financial travel assistance: NA,

Registration deadline: September 15th, 2020

Abstract submission: September 6th, 2020

Final presentation submission deadline: September 17th, 2020

Please upload your abstract to this website (see the menu on the left 'Call for Abstracts'):
      https://events.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/indico/event/154/call-for-abstracts/submit

The final presentations should be send to rkeller@mpifr.de.

This event has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 730562 [RadioNet]

Bluering is the CSIRO name given to a new generation of radio astronomy array receivers based on Xilinx’s Radio Frequency System on Chip (RFSOC) technology. Bluering was initially designed for low frequency radio astronomy applications (such as the MWA telescope), but has grown to be a receiver also capable of L-band radio astronomy (such as Phased Array Feeds). Bluering is not only an array receiver; the spare FPGA resources can be used to form multiple wideband beams, compute the array covariance matrix, RFI mitigation, and even pulsar timing.

To enable many types of astronomy receiver applications an RF daughter board, called Taipan, can be customised to have coaxial and fibre inputs. Available to each Taipan is a tuneable LO signal (which can double the number of RF inputs for some frequencies), attenuator control bits as well as a calibration signal. With all these features it is possible to customise the Taipan to most astronomy applications.

CSIRO has developed a prototype Bluering system based around the 16 input 2GSPS 12-bit ADC version of the RFSOC. This paper presents some of the design details, including liquid cooling, RFI shielding, optical timing, embedded control system, as well as signal processing and communications firmware. Prototyping results are also presented - in particular RFI shielding, power, weight, SNR, etc. will be shown. Following the development and testing of this initial version CSIRO is planning on building a second version (without some of the bugs!) and aims to improve the general performance of the system.
