Summary
We present the design, simulation and test results for a 32 element S-band (2.5-4GHz) dual polarization cryogenic Vivaldi array, which is intended to be a prototype for a larger 144 element array. In simulations the elements have a return loss better than 10dB across the band and a 3dB beam angle of ±30º at 2.5GHz. We will discuss the various design features of the antenna elements, including some of the features that will aid assembly. We will also talk about the different approaches (infinite, finite and array) to simulating phased arrays in Ansys’ High Frequency Structure Simulator. We also report on our “cheap” RF over fibre system and a design for an L-band thermal break that we have developed from an earlier Ka-band design.
